  81. This package contains WinGuard (V.2.2) from Cetus Software.  This
  82. document contains only a brief description of the package and its
  83. features, along with instructions for its installation.  Quite detailed
  84. documentation is included in the package, but it is in archived form,
  85. and is more easily read after installation.

  87. WinGuard password-protects Windows Program Manager groups and icons from
  88. being rearranged or damaged (accidentally or intentionally), with the
  89. automatic setting of any one of eight protection levels.  WinGuard can
  90. also hide "sensitive" programs (such as Windows Setup, Control Panel, or
  91. File Manager), as well as selected entire Program Manager groups and
  92. individual Control Panel icons, away from guest users.
  93.  
  94. WinGuard requires the Visual Basic 3.0 dynamic link library,
  95. VBRUN300.DLL, in order to run.  This file may usually be obtained from
  96. the source for this program, or may be obtained on diskette directly
  97. from Cetus Software (P.O. Box 700, Carver, MA 02330).

  99. WinGuard is a shareware program.  This evaluation version includes
  100. all features of the program, and is not crippled in any way.  You may
  101. use it for up to 30 days, without charge (see winguard.wri for more
  102. details).  If you like the program, and wish to continue its use after
  103. this evaluation period, you are required to pay for the program (see
  104. winguard.wri for more details).  Any fee you may have paid to others
  105. (disk vendors, dealers, etc.) to obtain this evaluation version was a

  142. ===== Installation =====================================

  144. Please note:  WinGuard requires VBRUN300.DLL, the Visual Basic 3.0
  145. dynamic link library file.  Ideally, VBRUN300.DLL should be located in
  146. the Windows System directory (typically C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM) on a
  147. non-networked computer, or in the Windows directory on a networked PC.
  148. WinGuard may be installed without this file being present, but will not
  149. run without it.  VBRUN300.DLL may usually be obtained from the source of
  150. this program, or may be obtained on diskette directly from Cetus
  151. Software (P.O. Box 700, Carver, MA 02330).

  153. The installation procedure for WinGuard is quite simple.  The
  154. package includes a program, "INSTALL.EXE", which automates the
  155. entire process.  You will need about 1 MB of available disk space
  156. on the hard drive on which you plan to install WinGuard (though this
  157. is reduced to about 600 KB if VBRUN300.DLL is already installed).
  158.  
  159. The exact steps you need to take will depend on how you received
  160. WinGuard.
  161.  
  162.  
  163. INSTALLING FROM DISKETTE
  164.  
  165. To install from diskette, you need to perform the following steps.
  166.  
  167.    o  Place the WinGuard distribution diskette in the
  168.       appropriate diskette drive.
  169.  
  170.    o  While running Windows, execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program on the
  171.       distribution diskette.  For example, if the distribution
  172.       diskette is on drive A:, type "A:\INSTALL" on the Run Line
  173.       available in Program Manager's File Menu.
  174.  
  175.    o  Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.
  176.       You will have a chance to approve installation before any changes
  177.       are actually made to the contents of your hard drive.

  180. INSTALLING FROM A HARD DRIVE
  181.  
  182. If you downloaded WinGuard from a BBS (or received it in the form of
  183. archive files from some other source), you will need to perform the
  184. following steps.
  185.  
  186.    o  Extract the contents of the archive file(s) in a temporary
  187.       directory on your hard drive.  The procedure for doing this
  188.       varies, depending on the form in which you received the package.
  189.       In all likelihood, the fact that you are reading this text means
  190.       that you already have the necessary tools and knowledge to
  191.       perform this step.  If not, you should be able to obtain
  192.       directions for this from the same source from which you received
  193.       the package.

  195.    o  Execute the "INSTALL.EXE" program which you have extracted.  For
  196.       example, if the temporary directory into which you have extracted
  197.       the WinGuard package is C:\TEMPDIR, you would execute the
  198.       command, "C:\TEMPDIR\INSTALL" by double-clicking on the
  199.       "INSTALL.EXE" filename in the "C:\TEMPDIR" directory in File
  200.       Manager.

  202.    o  Follow the instructions presented by the installation program.

  206.    o  When you're satisfied that the installation was successful, you
  207.       should delete the temporary directory FROM which you installed
  208.       WinGuard (C:\TEMPDIR, in the above discussion), including all its
  209.       contents.

  215. which have been installed.  In particular, read at least the text files
  216. installed as icons in the WinGuard group in Program Manager.  You should

  218. security feature BEFORE invoking it.
